Praying for Revival
I've been particularly affected by the writings of blogger naphtali_deer (Karen) ......who's been writing alot about the need to pray for revival in the Church - especially here in America. (I think I can lump Canada in that, as the USA isn't the only country in America! ) Recently, I've felt convicted as well, and have been praying for the Revival of the Church of Jesus here in Canada, as well as all over the world. Marantha! Come Lord Jesus!
Today, we had a guest minister from our neighboring congregation in Langley preach this afternoon. What a powerful reminder of the power of the Gospel! The sermon was based on Acts 16. This is where Paul and Silas end up going to Macedonia - (or Europe) after being prevented by the Holy Spirit from going to Asia and Bithynia. The theme of the sermon was "The Gospel invades Europe in a surprising, diverse and powerful manner." This was spelled out by the three events mentioned in this chapter - that of Lydia (a businesswoman), the slave girl who was possessed and of the Phillipian jailer. In each circumstance, God showed the Gospel in different, diverse ways. Lydia is already a "worshiper of God" - and by the power of the Holy Spirit, responds to the Gospel. This, my friends, is divine illumination and peruasion of the Spirit - necessary for those who have been called to respond. The LORD opened her heart! (she didn't open her own heart). Then, they encounter a slave girl who is possessed, and whom the annoyed Paul calls the spirit out of. While Lydia's conversion may have been quiet and without fanfare, this was more than likely a very public, dramatic event. We don't know if the slave girl becomes a follower of Jesus though. And lastly - there is the conversion of the jailer. Paul and Silas are in prison (because of the slave girl event) - and they are singing and praying while chained (imagine that!) when there is a great earthquake .........and you know the rest. The jailer - likely a burly fellow - not compassionate or kind, asks what he must do to be saved. He humbles himself, cleans them up, takes them home, feeds them ..........and Paul and Silas "spoke the word of the Lord to him, and to all who were in his house." .......and the jailer AND HIS WHOLE FAMLY was baptized. Incredible!! As the Pastor said in his sermon, the gospel comes to Europe with a BANG - God's power is unstoppable, the Gospel is unstoppable --- He is not restricted by laws and chains. (previous events in the book of Acts also show this in undeniable ways). The Gospel continued to move through Europe - and the growth in the Church of Christ Jesus was phenomenal.
But now today, Europe is in bad shape, increasingly becoming immoral .....and the USA and Canada are not far behind. The Gospel is advancing elsewhere now - the Lampstands are bright in places like China, South Africa, Brazil.
This particular pastor has had the privilege and honour of meeting with growing house churches in China. (we have relations with churches in China, helping them in their growth of the Reformed faith). He related a couple stories that just left me speechless (as a matter of fact, I didn't take notes during this time I was so spell bound!) He was meeting with a group of house church leaders and asked them how they came to know one another and work together. Their response? They met in jail and that was their connection. Another story of a man who had been jailed several times for preaching the Gospel - and was expecting to be jailed soon. The pastor said to him "you don't look very distressed". And the man replied that every time he was arrested he told his arresters that the only thing they were accomplishing by arresting him was to cause the Church of Christ to grow! He'd meet converts in jail - and when he got out his church would grow! How's THAT for the power of the Gospel? For the unstoppableness (is that even a word?) of the Gospel? Jesus' Church is growing by leaps and bounds in China and other places ........yet here, it seems to be stagnant. And so we should be praying for a revival in our nations, our communities, our own churches!
Canada itself is becoming more godless, more self-centered and more anti-Christ. And like the pastor said today, "if Canada continues to go down this road of moral decay, let it not be because of us ...let it be in spite of us!" We MUST let our lights shine! We must not hide or lose our saltiness. We must walk the walk AND talk the talk! We need to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and His Salvation - for He only is the Way, the Truth and the Life!
Let there be an INVASION of the Gospel here in Canada, in the USA and in Europe and may God's Kingdom come! Pray for revival brothers and sisters! Pray for the Church of Christ to stand up and shine in the darkness.

AMEN. Praying along with you! May we no longer be lethargic or lukewarm but be steadfast, immovable and always abounding in the work of the Lord!
II Timothy 2:9: The word of God is not bound! And very often God makes use of persecution to spread the Gospel: Acts 8:4; Phil. 1:12-13.
I was hoping that things were a little better in Canada. (not really, I am surprised that there is revival anywhere because I don't see it around my area.)
naphtali_deer - has been learning from the Lord and from some of our early fathers in the faith regarding the Lord's call to us for revival. As she wrote (above here) "May we no longer be lethargic or lukewarm ..." Karen has been relentless in her pursuit of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus for us to return to our first love. This same burning desire for revival is in me - actually, rekindled from a few years ago....where have I been?
You pray for revival here in the US and we'll pray for revival in Canada. Every time I see a post like this, I get excited because it is evidence that there is a glowing ember at least. God is not willing that we should lie dormant or hide our light under a bushel.
Thanks for this encouraging post!
@quest4god@revelife - thanks for coming by. I find it amazing how God uses people from all over the world for the same thing!! Because I've been reading so much about Karen's call for revival as she feels God's been putting it on her heart to do so -- I was just amazed at the sermon I heard this afternoon and really wanted to share it with my xanga brothers and sisters. God's timing is perfect - and I shared with that pastor that I've been praying for revival already. We may not see it around us - but God preserves for Himself His people!! (just like in Elijah's time). There's more out there ..... we just need to keep praying - because God answers those prayers! I was soooo encouraged to hear how rapidly the church is growing in China. Also, our churches have mission plants in Brazil, and have for years, and the Church is growing phenomenally there too. The Holy Spirit IS moving! Praise Him! I will for sure, continue to pray for revival for the USA -and thankyou for praying for Canada too! (in some respects, I believe Canada is worse than the USA).
@quest4god@revelife - Norm, I am seeing revival here. I am coming across women who are burdened over their sin and tired of empty Christianity; God has given them a taste of new wine. The same thing He had been doing in my life over the past few years. (And I've found people on Xanga/Revelife like this too.) These are people who have been saved a long time and all of a sudden the blinders fall off. And God has also been at work on campus as well. It's still not widespread here, but there is definitely a glowing ember for sure. I am excited and privileged and humbled to be a part of God's movement to bring like-minded brothers and sisters together to pray for revival. And I rejoice that God has brought us together via Xanga/Revelife. We know that was not a coincidence! I'd heard about calls to revival in the past, and frankly, I felt like I should care, but I really didn't. Not at all. Now as I read of the history of revival, I hunger and thirst for it. "Do it again, God!" God has thrust this whole thing on me and His love is now constraining me to press on until He comes in glory!
@nicolevw - Nicole, We sang the song "Days of Elijah" this morning in worship! I was feeling pretty low about a number of things at the time, but that got me focused right back where I needed to be. The devil is continuing to want to cloud my vision, but God continues to bring me back to where I must be: fixing my eyes on Him so I might run the race set before me with perseverance. I am so excited He is giving you a burden and a heart to pray! May He continue to raise up workers for the harvest! Psalm 126!
@nicolevw - Every time another person speaks up and reveals that hunger for revival, I get more excited! It is so ironic that God is awakening His people in the most "unlikely" places such as China, etc. We used to think of the Western Hemisphere as being the hub of God's activity and we the messengers. That is no longer the case, but God is raising up an army of believers here for the second (or third,or tenth...)wave. It seems that we (of the "civilized" world) are not too receptive of "outsiders" coming in to preach to US! After all, we practically invented evangelism *tongue in cheek*. Personally, I welcome all our brothers and sisters to share their zeal and concern for us.
Thanks for your reply and thanks for praying!
@naphtali_deer - Just "eavesdropping" a bit.... "Days of Elijah" is a great song for these times. How much drier could those bones get? Yet, my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness! That includes all of our needs, from salvation to restoration. Come Holy Spirit, come!
@quest4god@revelife - Doing a little "eavesdropping" as well...re: China. No, no place is closed to the Gospel for all things are possible for God! I just finished "Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret" yesterday...all about how God opened up China! I attended a conference a few years ago on the 200th anniversary of the Haystack prayer meeting. At the time I didn't have a vision for revival, but the emphasis there was that the Church is growing in South America, Africa and Asia, but Europe and N. America are languishing. That was one part of God beginning to open my eyes to the need right here.
And about "Days of Elijah." The first couple worship songs were so perfect yesterday. First the song "Only You," (a Hillsong song, which I'd heard before but wasn't really familiar w/ it), which I SO needed to hear re: personal idols (not that it was all about that, but partly, of course) and then "Days of Elijah." When I hear Days of Elijah it's almost always bittersweet b/c it has memories of worship at our last church...Yet I must press on in the grace and strength He provides and not look back...
Come Holy Spirit, come! Amen and Amen, my brother.
Hey.. thanks for stopping in. Hope you had a wonderful 4th weekend. We just kind of vegged at home..
Blessings,
Phil
